Florence is an obvious stop on any trip to Italy, but amazingly few people stray from the herd to discover one of Europe’s most beautiful regions, Tuscany. We put the same pride and passion that has won us the number 1 rating for Vatican Tours into our private Siena day trip from Florence adding luxury features like a farm lunch with the best of Tuscan cuisine, and a visit to San Gimignano to come full circle on the rich patrimony of this territory. All with door-to-door service from a private English-speaking driver to lead you on this journey of discovery.
Siena is the most important center for art in Tuscany after Florence, and its charming streets are awash with its colorful yet sometimes dramatic history. In the Middle Ages Siena and Florence were bitter rivals leading to the creation of some of the most incredible feats of art and architecture humanity has ever seen, all in an effort to outdo one another.
This is most evident in Siena Cathedral, or the Duomo, arguably the most spectacular major church in all of Italy. Built between 1196 and 1348 it is actually the only completed part of a project to construct the largest cathedral in Christendom. Its black and white marble and frescoed interior are a symphony to the eyes, and you’ll be able to see works by Michelangelo, and Bernini as well as a host of Tuscan painters and sculptors.
Another place that absolutely cannot be missed is Piazza del Campo, again one of the most iconic on the Italian Peninsula. Dominated by the incredibly high Torre del Mangia and crowned by the Fonte Gaia fountain, this amphitheater-like dipping piazza is still the center of daily life for the city’s inhabitants. It is also home to the famous Palio horse race every summer. Soak in the history from your driver before exploring on your own or book a private guide to uncover its every facet.
After your morning in Siena, we’ll take you into the heart of Tuscany’s evocative landscape for a farm lunch, where you’ll delight in the best of local culinary traditions, not to mention the areas winemaking. Savor the region’s pecorino sheep’s milk cheeses, locally produced cured meats, and of course handmade kinds of pasta that you can only eat here, accompanied by a tasting of wines produced from the ground you are standing on including San Gimignano and Chianti. You’ll also be able to tour the grounds and relax before the second leg of the tour.
Once lunch is a pleasant memory, you’ll be off to visit the day’s second Medieval gem, the hill town of San Gimignano. As its 13 stone towers and winding cobbled streets attest, this is truly like stepping into a time machine and setting the dial to the year 1300. Known as the Manhattan of the Middle Ages the city was once domineered by some 72 towers showing the power of the city’s affluent. It is the perfect place for an afternoon walk and you’ll be able to discover spots like Piazza della Cisterna with its original well, as well as visit Collegiata Church with its vivid frescos of the Last Judgment.
