Travel Through Centuries from Ancient to Baroque

Rome is a unique city that has been built up in layers over thousands of years and continues to grow today – an outcome is a magical place where the old and new coincide and create a stunning backdrop for locals, tourists, and filmmakers alike. You’ll have the opportunity to see some of Rome’s most cinematic stops including the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, and the Trevi Fountain, which have been featured in widely acclaimed films such as Roman Holiday, La Dolce Vita, and Three Coins in the Fountain. And, fortunately for travelers, the scenes are so stunning that getting that postcard-perfect photograph is no difficult feat. But What a Life Tours certainly goes beyond snapping the perfect photo and ticking off bucket list items. Instead, we aim to transport you to a different time altogether.

Reminisce about Ancient Rome and be astounded by stories of the Pantheon and Hadrian’s Temple as you admire their imposing structures. Contemplate how the power of Ancient Emperors and the innovative prowess of ancient architects culminated nearly 2,000 years ago to create what remains to be the world’s largest unsupported dome. Then, only a brief walk away, find yourself fascinated by the Baroque Period in Piazza Navona, gazing upon masterful 17th-century works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini, while surrounded by modern restaurants and cafes. The broad scope of history that Rome covers can seem a bit overwhelming, but you don’t have to worry about it! We’ve already sorted out all the info and we’ll be sure to give you only the most riveting details!

Scope Out the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain & Pantheon Plus Gelato

Walk in the footsteps of famous romantic writers Lord Byron, Percy B. Shelley, and John Keats on the Spanish Steps. In the 1800s they each found themselves in Rome, for one reason or another, spending much of their time in Piazza di Spagna. John Keats actually lived in what is now the Shelley-Keats museum, located at the bottom ride side of the butterflied staircase. While the area was then ideal for starving artists of the time, it is now one of the most luxurious shopping areas in town, hosting big names like Dolce & Gabbana and Prada. Also noteworthy is the Fontana della Barcaccia, or Fountain of the Ugly Boat, located at the base of the steps. It was made in collaboration by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his father Pietro in 1629 and had been inspired by a legend of a flood that carried a ship to the very same place in 1598.

Your trip to Rome simply would not be complete without a stop at the Trevi Fountain and, if you are superstitious, you might choose to toss a coin in, too! 3,000 euros are thrown into the fountain on a daily basis – but why? Legend has it that if you throw a coin with your left hand over your right shoulder into the fountain then you will return to Rome someday. If you throw two coins, you’ll return to Rome and fall in love. For three coins, you can add a happy marriage to the equation. Whether or not you enjoy superstitious legends and tales, we’re certain that you will enjoy an authentic Italian gelato – on us! Just a little treat from What a Life Tours before we part ways just in time for supper!
