What you’ll See Along the Way

The Uffizi Gallery Florence

The Uffizi Gallery is filled to the brim with an unbelievably vast collection of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces. Originally the administrative center of Medici power in the city, from Uffici, or 'offices' in Italian, the top floor was dedicated to the family's private treasure trove of art, which grew to occupy the entire building.

Botticelli's Birth of Venus

Botticelli’s Birth of Venus (1482–1485) is one of the world's great works of art. It does not depict Venus' birth, but her arrival on Cyprus. She 'hangs five' on the rim of a huge oyster shell, pushed to shore by the breath of Zephyrus and Aura. The winds lend a fantastic sense of movement most noticeable in the rippled water, scattered roses, billowing fabrics and flowing hair.

Botticelli's Spring

Spring (1477-1482), another remarkable item in the Uffizi Gallery’s Botticelli collection, was painted just years before the Birth of Venus. Though the two are not part of any specific artistic series, they are often discussed together. Again, Venus is at the center of a natural landscape surrounded by Cupid, Flora, Mercury, Zephyr and others.

Michelangelo's Doni Tondo

The Doni Tondo (1503-1504), a.k.a. the 'Holy Family', is Michelangelo’s only painting on panel. It was commissioned by the wealthy banker Agnolo Doni once again to celebrate a marriage. The painting depicts the Madonna turning to take baby Jesus from Joseph’s arms, creating a circular flow that leads the viewer’s eye seamlessly through the colorful scene.

Raphael's Madonna of the Goldfinch

The Madonna of the Goldfinch (1506) is a stunning example of High Renaissance art depicting Mary with an infant Jesus and John the Baptist in a tenderly balanced scene. Though everything seems peaceful at first glance, hidden symbolism hints at Jesus' fate with St. John holding a goldfinch, symbol of the crucifixion, and Mary’s open book revealing his future.

Raphael's Portrait of Leo X (Medici)

The Uffizi is also home to Raphael’s Portrait of Leo X with two Cardinals (1518), recognized as a freshly realistic, unpolished approach to a papal portrait, and Raphael’s Self-Portrait (1503-1506).

Leonardo Da Vinci's Annunciation

The Annunciation (1472-1475) was completed when Leonardo was just 20 years old. The popular Biblical scene was unique in the context of a garden outside. Another interesting feature can be seen in the angel’s wings, which look more like a bird's. Da Vinci's vision of marriage between religion and science is nearly omnipresent in this early masterpiece.

Titian's Venus of Urbino

Titian’s Venus Of Urbino (1538) was the first reclining nude female in post-classical history. Unlike previous paintings of Venus, Titian placed the goddess in a modern domestic setting with furniture and fluffy white linens. Undeniably sensual, as the soft, fleshy subject gazes back into the eyes of viewer. A dog represents fidelity and her drop earring alludes to purity.

Tour Summary Get in the Know

Exploring the Uffizi Shrine of the Renaissance

On this private tour of Florence’s Uffizi Gallery, you’ll enjoy a personal in-depth journey into one of the world’s most incredible collections of Renaissance art. Whether you’re a painting lover, a history aficionado, or ‘just don’t want to leave Italy without its curious, you’re sure to be absolutely floored by the beauty of the Uffizi’s masterpiece-laden corridors.

Your private guide will be on hand to show you how the influential changes in Europe’s visual history began, from the Tuscan city that made it all possible, all with a healthy dose of patronage from the Medici. Side by side with your passionate and private Florentine art expert, you’ll uncover the stories and methods behind the most important works by Italian Renaissance masters like Giotto, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Raphael, and more.

A Revolution in Painting Mastery Over Medium

Your first-hand discovery of the Uffizi Gallery’s artwork starts with the monumental icons typical of Florence in the late Middle Ages when shimmering altarpieces and placement of humanity in contrast to the divine-dominated artistic inspiration. Dazzling, these works of adoration were calculated by design and in their message, treating religious subjects without allegory or metaphor, but your guide will show you how a new light began to appear in works like Giotto’s Madonna Enthroned, as layers covering a rediscovery of humanity began to peel away.

Now that your guide has fully prepared you for the explosion of the Renaissance, you are ready to savor the genius of Botticelli, embodied best in his Birth of Venus. Seen in the flesh, she is as captivating as any goddess of love should be. Every imagined current is loaded with symbolism, and the meaning is clear… the human has become the divine again. Continue these musings with the sister-painting Spring, and your guide may have to wake you from your trance.

In the Company of Masters Da Vinci & Co.

As the human reached the divine (or vice versa), religious motifs were repurposed as the backdrop for the major shift in aesthetics, with each master adding ingenuity to the movement based on their own particular strengths, not to mention brazen ambition. Your guide will leave no palette unturned on this adventure into the art that made history.

You’ll witness the mystical naturalism of Da Vinci’s Annunciation with its perfect natural perspective, Raphael’s portrait of Pope Leo X, the tenderness of the Madonna of the Goldfinch, and the Mannerist vibrancy of the Doni Tondo by Michelangelo. End the tour with Titian’s seductive Venus of Urbino, and the arcane gaze of Caravaggio’s Medusa.
