What you’ll See Along the Way

Michelangelo's David

Michelangelo began work on this 17ft-tall masterpiece in 1501, when he was just 26 years old. Completed in 1504, this ode to the sublime beauty of the human form and symbol of Florence's brazen independent spirit was placed in front of Palazzo Vecchio. It has been housed in the Accademia since 1873.

Florence Cathedral (Outside)

Also known as Santa Maria del Fiore, or simply the 'Duomo', this fantastically vibrant church dominates the Florentine skyline. The structure itself, without the facade, took 140 years to complete from 1296 to 1436. Brunelleschi's gravity-defying dome is as innovative now as when it was first unveiled.

Baptistery Doors

Florence's baptistery is dedicated to the city's patron saint, John the Baptist. Gaze upon the golden bronze of its eastern doors, dubbed the 'Gates of Paradise', and you'll be looking at the masterpiece that launched the Renaissance. When Ghiberti's biblical scenes were revealed in 1452, they were recognized as a new style of art.

The 'Porcellino' Statue

Folklore is around every corner in Florence, especially at the Mercato Nuovo. As you make your way past the market stalls of colorful leathers and souvenirs, you’ll see the 'Porcellino’s' sheeny snout. More wild boar (‘cinghiale’) than 'little piggy', this bronze statue can ensure your return to Florence, all you have to do is put a coin in his mouth.

Piazza della Signoria

One of Italy's most famous piazzas, this is an open-air sculpture gallery like you've never seen. From the stately Loggia dei Lanzi to the impenetrable Palazzo Vecchio, there's no doubt this is Florence's historic center of power. The statue of David is a replica commemorating the spot where the original first stood.

Ponte Vecchio

No trip to Florence is complete without watching the waters of the Arno glide under Ponte Vecchio. This 14th century bridge was once reserved for butchers and tanners, then handed over to goldsmiths by the Medici. Jewelers still have there shops here, and the Vasari Corridor connecting Palazzo Vecchio and the Pitti Palace runs overhead.

Streets of Florence

There's only one word for the streets of Florence, and that is enchanting. From Medieval alleys to elegant palazzi, Gothic cornices to Renaissance masterpieces, walking them is literally the exploration of 1,000 years of incredible history and secrets kept to time. As you wander, you'll find you never want to leave.

Rome to Florence in a Day The Private Edition

What could be better than expanding your Rome trip with a quick day-long hop up to Italy’s Renaissance capital? Our Private Florence Day Trip from Rome does just that, limiting the transportation time by replacing the at least 3-hour drive both ways, with the quick 1-hour and 30-minute high-speed train journey.

This means that you’re literally getting half your transportation time back, devoting it to Florence instead, and be back in Rome in time to plan the rest of your activities in the Eternal City. Better still, your guide will be waiting for you at the Florence train station when you arrive.

Michelangelo’s David Crown of the Renaissance

The first stop on your privately guided Florence itinerary is the Accademia Gallery, where you will have pre-reserved skip-the-line tickets to see Michelangelo’s David in the flesh. Not only is this masterpiece the culminating symbol of the Renaissance, but it is also the climax of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s sculptural genius. You’ll hear the captivating story behind this sculpture of both divine and human inspiration from your personal art historian, who will tell you all about its incredible creation.

Sculpted between 1501 and 1504 from a nearly discarded mass of lunar Carrara marble, this stunning figure would have never seen the light of day had it not met with Michelangelo’s hammer and chisel. You’ll have to ask yourself, how was this level of perfection even possible for one man? Your guide will have the answers on the master’s process, as well as the statue’s place in Florentine history. You’ll also see the partially finished “Slaves”, enigmatic visions of Michelangelo’s creative vision as he sought to “free” inside marble blocks.

Florence’s Historic Center A Full Immersion

Next, you’ll hit the streets of Florence with your passionate local expert all to yourself to unlock its secrets. On this private walking tour of its most definitive sights, you’ll make stops to admire the Florence Cathedral, or Santa Maria del Fiore, topped with Brunelleschi’s gravity-defying dome, as well as visit Piazza della Signoria to hear tales of the Medici and the struggles for political power in the city, before crossing over to see the most unique jeweler’s market you can imagine, Ponte Vecchio.

All along the way, you’ll head to hidden corners of the piazzas and down alley-sized medieval streets to uncover the city’s magic. Whether it is the bronze doors of the baptistry that launched a new era in human expression or the romantic meanderings of the Arno River, you’ll be left with an indelible image of this marvelous open-air museum to take with you forever with all the extra insight you crave from your private guide. So, next time you ask yourself if something is beautiful or not, consider what Florence would say.

What our Customers say...

High Speed Train with Private Tour of Florence - Exceeded Expectations!

Our family of 6 adults found ourselves with an extra day in Rome. We decided to venture north to Florence taking advantage of the high speed train. We didn’t have a lot of time to plan so went on line and found What a Life Tours. I am so glad we did! The tour I wanted wasn’t listed for the day we wanted so I emailed Joseph/Giuseppe directly. He worked with me to arrange everything! We got our train tickets for the times we wanted and it was very easy to figure out. Our guide was Elizabeth and she met us at our appointed place. We had her picture and phone number of anything had gone wrong - but it didn’t. The tour was excellent. A wonderful overview of the city all within easy walking distance. We visited all the sites and then some. Elizabeth is very knowledgeable and obviously loves the city! Her love of art history provided additional dimension to the discussion of the city. She recommended places to eat and visit during our free time. We all fell in love with the city and are so glad we found What a Life Tours!”
