DISTANCE: 125 km north of Rome (1 hour and 45 minutes)
Civita di Bagnoregio, known to locals as the ‘dying city’ due to its harrowing position on a crumbling mountaintop is an enchanting little village. You’ll be blown away by the panoramic view across the valley, but equally charmed by what remains of the quiet little medieval town.

BRACCIANO

DISTANCE: 40 km northwest of Rome (1 hour)
Bracciano, a small town on the edge of a large lake of the same name, is a great mix of history and nature. Wander around the town to soak up the history and admire the prominent medieval castle, and after head down to the lake for a leisurely walk or some water sports.

Parco dei Mostri (Park of Monsters) is a 16th-century surrealist park scattered with mythical creatures and fantastical animals. A vision of one man and the expression of his grief over the loss of his wife, it shocked visitors at the time due to its grotesque nature and rejection of Renaissance values.

Orvieto, located in the hills of Umbria is a gorgeous little town sitting on top of a volcanic rock. You’ll be rewarded with amazing views overlooking Umbria, one of the most spectacular cathedral facades in Italy, winding alleyways with unique artisan crafts, and of course quality local wine and cuisine!

Castel Gandolfo is a delightful little village in the Alban hills to the south of Rome. It is perhaps most famous for being the home to the Pope’s summer palace (now a museum) but it also boasts gorgeous views of Lake Albano and a quaint small town atmosphere.

DISTANCE: 80 km southeast of Rome (1 hour and 20 minutes)
Giardino di Ninfa is probably the closest thing to a real-life fairytale you’ll ever see. It’s a landscape garden built on the ruins of a medieval village and the combination of stone and nature is truly magical. Impressively, it’s also home to over 1300 botanical species, making it not only enchanting but incredibly unique!

Calcata has all the beauty of a sleepy hilltop town with a twist! It has a long history but is most famous for being abandoned by its residents in the 1930s due to fear that the rock on which the village stands would crumble. In the 1960s it was repopulated by artists from all over the world and now has a vibrant and active artistic community. Its strangest claim to fame is that it was home to the Holy Prepuce (Jesus’s foreskin)!

DISTANCE: 35 km southeast of Rome (30-40 minutes)
Frascati was and still is, a favourite summer escape for Romans. Its position in the hills south of Rome makes temperatures a little more bearable when summer hits. It’s famous for its gorgeous villas and its white wine and you can enjoy both when you visit!

DISTANCE: 45 km east of Rome (45 minutes -1 hour)
Tivoli, a lovely town in its own right, is home to some of the most beautiful villas in Italy. The good news is there’s a villa to suit everyone’s interest; Hadrian’s Villa for the archaeological lover, Villa D’Este for the art and architectural lover, and Villa Gregoriana for the adventurer and the nature lover.
