The royal residence of Caserta (or Reggia di Caserta in Italian) was constructed for the Bourbon Kings of Naples in the 18th century. The grandiose palace mixes Baroque and Neoclassical styles and, with 5 floors and 1,200 rooms, covers 235,000 square meters. By volume, it is the largest royal palace in the world!
In fact, from the very beginning, the plan was to build a palace that would surpass the size and magnificence of the French Versailles and, boasting almost twice as many fully frescoed monumental rooms and equally decadent fountains, many would say that it was a success.
The gorgeous palace has been used as a set for famous blockbusters including Mission Impossible, Angels & Demons, and even two Star Wars films!
It’s easy to pass a full day at this UNESCO World Heritage site. Follow the lavish corridors and admire the art collection scattered throughout rooms fit for a king – literally!
Get a glimpse at how royalty once lived within the palace walls as you get an up close look at their painted family portraits, intricate mosaic floors, extravagantly elegant chandeliers, and other decadent furnishings.
